How to Start Your Own Backyard Flock

Starting your first flock of chickens can feel overwhelming, but with a few simple steps (and a little encouragement), you’ll soon be gathering fresh eggs and enjoying life with your new feathered friends. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

Choosing the Right Breed for Your Family

One of the first questions I get is, “Which breed should I start with?” At Wild & Free Homestead, I recommend heritage breeds for beginners—they’re hardy, gentle, and have stood the test of time. Look for chickens that are known for their calm temperament and reliable egg production, like [Insert Krista’s breed here, e.g., Barred Rocks or Buff Orpingtons].

Tip: Visit your local farm or connect with a reputable breeder (like me!) to see the birds in person and ask about their personalities.

Setting Up Your Coop and Daily Care

Your coop doesn’t have to be fancy, but it does need to be safe, dry, and secure from predators. Plan on at least 2–3 square feet per chicken inside the coop, and more space for a safe outdoor run.
Provide clean water and fresh feed daily, and check on your flock each morning and evening. You’ll also want to collect eggs every day and change out bedding weekly for a healthy environment.

My Daily Routine:

  • Fresh water and feed
  • Quick health check (looking for bright eyes and active birds)
  • Egg collection
  • Evening lock-up for safety

Final Thoughts: Start Small, Enjoy the Journey

Starting a backyard flock is as much about the experience as it is about the eggs. Don’t be afraid to start small—three to five hens is perfect for most families. Reach out anytime for support, and happy homesteading!
